UWM Then & Now
Established in 1885 as the Wisconsin State Normal School, the university was soon renamed to the Wisconsin State Teachers College-Milwaukee in efforts to focus on teachers. In 1951, a state law mandated the college to offer liberal arts programs which led the university to change its name for the third time to the Wisconsin State College–Milwaukee. Finally in 1956, the school was renamed to what we know and love, the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee!
